Origins and Vision
The Women in Mining and Energy Awards (WiMEA) was conceived and launched by IanMatSun Global Services Limited, a Ghanaian media and event management company established in 2017 and based in Accra. IanMatSun is a social enterprise that champions gender equality, diversity, and inclusion through its awards platforms, alongside its other portfolios focused on sustainability and health, environment, safety, and security.
The awards were born out of a recognition that Ghana’s mining and energy industries, while central to the national economy, remained heavily male-dominated, and that the contributions of women in these sectors were largely unrecognized and uncelebrated.
The platform was conceptualized to identify and publicly recognize women who have played significant roles and made key contributions to these two sectors, while also encouraging STEM education among the female gender. As Isaac Nana Adu-Gyamfi, Event Director, articulated the founding philosophy: “There is a mantra in the STEM programme that says, you can’t be what you can’t see. We therefore believe it is important we highlight the role that women play in these industries and recognize their outstanding contributions and achievements — by honouring them and sharing their success stories.”
